This is a typical Indian eatery in the heart of Soho, a place I must have walked past many times without really noticing. The menu is also slightly unremarkable, with no real surprises.
But that doesn’t mean it’s not good. In fact we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the cooking. The Maharaja’s Mixed Grill got things off t a good start, as did the Mangalorean Crab.
As for main course, the Goan Chicken Vindaloo wasn’t quite as hot as I would have liked, but it was tasty. The Chicken Jalfrezi and Mutton Xacutti were both rather better.
The stand-out feature for Gopal’s was the service: cheerful, friendly and efficient but not intrusive. Add in the fact that most main courses are under £10 and you have a restaurant that deserves a visit if you’re in the area.
