This restaurant has a spectacular setting, with windows looking out over St Katherine’s Dock, which is connected to the Thames near Tower Bridge. The main room is large and airy, and the service is efficient and friendly.
The selection of starters was somewhat limited, but our choice included Machi Galouri, “a skewered golden fried minced cod and shrimp kebab.” It was a bit dry but not unpleasant. Other starters of Chicken Pakora and Onion Bhaji were more succulent.
The waiter had boasted that Mala served “the best Vindaloo in London” so this had to be put to the test. The Chicken Vindaloo we ordered was indeed very tasty, although not especially hot. Other choices included a very succulent Lamb Jalfrezi and a main-course Chicken Tikka Achari, which was indeed a generous portion. Side dishes of Aloo Saag and Mushroom Lahsooni were good.
Conclusion: a useful eatery, particularly if the setting is important, with reasonable food that’s slightly pricier than most but not excessively so.
