The Hampshire
On first sight you’d probably think it was a pub – and indeed it once was: it was called The Hampshire Hog. But as people from the Indian sub-continent do not generally eat pork, the “Hog” has been dropped in its transformation to a curry restaurant.
The place is big, with a large outdoor area as well (presumably to cater for the shisha users).
The menu claims to draw “inspiration from the diversity of India’s gastronomy”, and indeed there is a large choice. We started with Cod Pakora and Chilli Chicken (the latter being more reminiscent of Sweet and Sour Chicken as found in Chinese eateries). I went for the Chicken Jalfrezi as my main course choice, and it was very good. We also shared a variety of vegetable dishes and breads.
The standard of the food was high and portions were generous. I’m afraid that on this occasion appetites did not extend to trying the desserts.
Service was spot on — friendly but not intrusive. I will definitely go back to try out further menu choices.
